As a DTF printing operator, you come into contact with different types of hot-melt powder every day. So which one is truly the best fit for you? Products on the market vary enormously — how do you choose the right hot-melt powder, and how do you avoid the common pitfalls? Let's discuss and learn together today.
DTF hot-melt powder is mainly classified by three dimensions: material composition, particle size, and color.
TPU Powder — Thermoplastic Polyurethane — Good elasticity, soft hand feel, strong stretchability, wash-resistant — The mainstream first choice: cotton, poly-cotton, sportswear and other stretch fabrics

Industry status: TPU powder is the mainstream choice for DTF heat transfer. The common white and black powders on the market are mostly TPU-based.
TPU Powder by Particle Size
Fine powder, 0–80 μm — thin coating, softest hand feel; slightly weaker adhesion on heavy fabrics
Medium powder, 80–200 μm — balanced hand feel and durability; the all-purpose grade, most widely used
Coarse powder, 150–250 μm — best durability and thicker coating, but a firmer hand feel; suitable for denim, canvas, bags and other abrasion-resistant items
Fine, Medium and Coarse Powder: What Are the Differences and Their Characteristics?
Fine Powder — approx. 0–80 μm
Visual analogy: like flour
Hand feel: the softest; you can barely feel the film
Adhesion / wash resistance: relatively weak; peels off easily on heavy fabrics
Detail sharpness: the highest — ideal for small text and fine lines
Drawbacks: prone to picking up powder; blank areas easily catch powder; shaking off powder is harder
Medium Powder — approx. 80–200 μm
Visual analogy: like salt
Hand feel: moderate, balanced
Adhesion / wash resistance: strong; sufficient for general use; abrasion- and wash-resistant
Detail sharpness: medium — good enough for ordinary designs
Coarse Powder — approx. 120–250 μm
Powder application: the easiest to shake off, the most stable — large gaps make powder shaking the simplest
Best for: dark cotton, heavy fabric, hoodies, denim, bags and other abrasion-resistant items; preferred in humid weather or when a 3D effect is needed
Final summary: In practice, we use medium-to-fine powder the most — it can meet 80% of our customers' needs. Feel free to leave your comments and questions below.
